FAQ
What degree can a student do at CIDA?
Students can enrol in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree programme, where they can specialise in Marketing, Finance and Investments, Human Resources or Entrepreneurship.
Return to topAre there any other courses offered at CIDA?
CIDA students can do a course in ICT (Information and Communications Technology) alongside their BBA degree. There they learn programming, networking and hardware maintenance and complete with a certificate in ICT in addition to the BBA degree. The ICT Academy was begun by T-Systems and is supported by Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems, Oracle and SAP.
Return to topHow do you find your students?
CIDA uses its large network of schools across the country to attract students. Principals recommend their top students and provide them with application forms. CIDA also runs advertising campaigns on radio and in print. Word of mouth through current students also plays a major role: they spread awareness by teaching between term times in their local schools, as well as by returning as graduates as an example of someone from the community who has gained an education.
Return to topI am a student and I want to get a scholarship at CIDA City Campus. What should I do?
You must first contact CIDA City Campus and request an application form from the Registrar. You can do this by ringing CIDA City Campus on +27 11 833 8825 and asking for the Registrar’s office, or you can send an email to Mr Mburu Gitonga, Registrar, at mgitonga@gmail.com. Once you are accepted at CIDA, you can go to the Student Welfare Office on campus and apply for a scholarship. Applications for scholarship sent directly to CIDA Foundation UK will not be accepted. You should understand that you will still need money for the application fee and for some living expenses at CIDA until you get a scholarship. Students on scholarship typically receive 90% of what they need in tuition and living costs. Each CIDA student is expected to find a way to contribute a little bit financially to his or her own education.
Return to topWhat are the criteria for acceptance to CIDA City Campus?
Students must have a minimum matric score of 1200 and must also demonstrate that their parents or guardians do not have the financial means to send them to another university. CIDA also has a geographic quota to ensure that all 9 South African provinces, in addition to a small percentage from other African countries, are represented. Finally, CIDA seeks students who demonstrate a desire to uplift Africa by giving back to their communities.
Return to topWhere do students live when they are at CIDA?
When students at CIDA are in their first year, they attend a residential programme called Foundation College. Almost 500 students live on that campus, which is about 12km from the main downtown campus. When students move into their second year and begin the BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration), they either live in residences rented by CIDA or stay with family nearby. Some have managed to find accommodation on their own.
Return to topDoes CIDA Foundation UK support other organisations or individuals apart from CIDA City Campus?
CIDA Foundation UK at present only funds CIDA City Campus. We do not consider grants to individuals or other organisations. While we fund a variety of projects and activities at CIDA City Campus, CIDA Foundation UK only fund scholarships for students that have already been accepted to CIDA City Campus.
Return to topIf CIDA has sponsors like Oprah Winfrey, Sir Richard Branson and Michael Dell, what difference could my help make?
CIDA is truly proud to have formed partnerships with well-known individuals and companies internationally. Apart from being rewarding relationships, they lend credibility to our cause and encourage new partners to believe in us and take notice of CIDA’s work. Perhaps the only disadvantage of these partnerships is when outsiders feel that we probably have enough funding with their support. CIDA is an organisation that is over 90% donor dependent at present, and until sustainability measures that have been put in place mature in 2011, CIDA is in great need of continued donor support.
Return to topIs there a CIDA City Campus in the UK?
No. There is no campus in the UK and there are no CIDA students studying in the UK. At times, CIDA students in the third year of their degree come to the UK to complete 2-month internships. However these are only available to students doing their third year at CIDA City Campus in Johannesburg.
What is CIDA Foundation UK?
CIDA Foundation UK is an independent UK charity that raises funding and awareness internationally for CIDA City Campus.
