CIDA launches the School of Investments


CIDA School of Investments opens to provide black investment professionals to the SA market

13 July 2007: Last night the CIDA School of Investments opened. The school is sponsored by JPMorgan, the JSE Ltd and Reuters.

The School aims develop our students into professionals to become future financial markets employees. It will leverage off CIDA’s BBA degree, with students who enroll in the school, specialising in the Investments and Financial Markets field.

It will provide students with a simulated trading desk environment offering Reuters terminals, with all hardware donated by DELL.  The students will enter the JSE University Investment Challenge game, gaining practical research and trading skills.

CIDA School of Investment students will write the South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM) Registered Persons Examination as well as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program.    

Taddy Blecher, CIDA’s chief executive said, “The School will give students the opportunity to get into highly prestigious careers in the investments, asset and portfolio management and financial market trading industries.”

As the key financial sponsor of the school, JPMorgan has granted over R2 million towards establishing the school and will continue to support it. In addition, students will have access to all JPMorgan research and the company will also provide guest lecturers.

“JPMorgan has long supported CIDA City Campus and also sponsors a Career Centre at the institution. Funding the CIDA School of Investments is the perfect way for us to invest sustainably in the future of South Africa. We hope to source some of our best graduates from the school in the future,” said Jon Zehner, senior company officer, JPMorgan Sub-Saharan Africa.

The JSE will provide industry-related guest lecturers to the school, opportunities in the financial sector as well as vacation jobs. In addition, the Exchange will assist in the establishment of the simulated trading room. Students will enter the JSE University Investment Challenge, introducing them to the workings of a securities market and enabling them to become aware of the fundamentals of share investment strategies.

The new school will also be strongly supported by Reuters, with the supply of 17 Reuters premium keystations and an annual cash donation – together worth over R2 million per year, plus a commitment to offer regular Reuters training to the students of the school and the opportunities for internships.
